Despite being entirely self-taught David's early paintings are grounded in a very "traditional" style. During the 1980s David produced many large, technically accomplished works; to a standard that very few modern artists ever achieve. They mainly centred around his home town of Wigan.

Paintings such as "Market Hall" and "Wigan Pier" were published as limited edition prints and quickly sold out. Throughout the 1980s David's prints were a common feature on many walls around Greater Manchester and Lancashire. The originals of most of these paintings now hang in Wigan Town Hall. His Wigan originals are extremely scarce and hence highly sought-after.
